“50 Shades of Grey”

The film is about – which, however, I don’t know how anyone would not know what it’s about at this point – sheepish literature college student, Anastasia Steele meets [seductive] billionaire, Christian Grey who introduces her into the world of eroticism, dominance, and submission. Something in the universe draws them to each other and Ana’s eyes – and legs – are opened to new experiences with this strange man, only to soon find out that he is tormented by demons from his past.

I did not read the books (unfortunately?), but just about every other person I know did. After seeing the film, I’m still “curious” about how the books are, but I’m not jumping at the opportunity to buy them quite yet. I’m still a tad skeptical. I have a tiny feeling that they’re going to be a more “adult version” of the Twilight series. Please correct me if I’m misinformed.

I join hands with Rotten Tomatoes as they give Fifty Shades 26 percent on the “Tomatometer” and described it as “a less than satisfying experience on the screen.” I did become a little more fond of the main characters, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) as the movie went on, which I was relieved for, but this could have been attributed to an article I read in Glamour magazine where the actors are asked about their experience and their take on the characters. Anastasia’s innocence and purity and “cuteness” is instantly more attractive than Christian’s finesse. Jamie Dornan wasn’t convincing enough for me as Christian Grey; he, too, seemed just as innocent and vulnerable as Anastasia, but I do see potential there.

I give a bow to director, Sam Taylor-Johnson for doing just what she set out to do: protect her actors and portray them respectfully. The film is as erotic as it is intended to be, but not raunchy and the usage of nudity and sexual content is appropriate. I’m sure the books go into way more detail than the movies, but I think the film accomplished pleasing its quickly-growing group of readers involved the cult following. The ending will leave you frustrated (cliff-hanger), but I usually take those as a good sign that the next movie will be just as pleasing, if not more.

To sum it up, I never had to use a safe word while watching Fifty Shades of Grey. You won’t either.
